NORTHCOTE HOUSE 02
This Northcote project tackles the challenge of designing a home on a compact site within a charming cul-de-sac. The design incorporates sustainable features such as solar energy utilization, northern orientation, cross-ventilation, batten shutters, and rendered brick veneer walls, all of which optimize thermal efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and ensure comfort throughout the year. Timber screens soften the rendered walls and unify the façade, seamlessly blending with the streetscape. The geometry of the timber screen veil around the body of the house was designed as a subtle nod to the surrounding cul-de-sac, asserting its presence without visually overwhelming the intimate court, which is often used by residents as a shared entertaining space. Inside, the home embraces eco-friendly principles with polished concrete floors, oiled spotted gum stairs, and timber accents throughout the various rooms. These materials offer both durability and warmth, creating a functional, environmentally conscious living space that harmonizes with its surroundings. Photos by Peter Bennetts
